Fill containers to capacity or fill extra
spaces with packaging material. |

Pack heavy items into small boxes,
this will make them easier to move. |

Label every box so that you can find what
you need later. Leave space to reach the back of the unit and put frequently used items
near the front. |

Don't use newsprint to pack
anything that can be stained by the ink. |

Metal objects like tools and bikes should
be wiped with a rag containing machine oil to prevent rust. |

Appliances should be clean and dry. |
 |
Defrost refrigerators and freezers
before storing and leave doors ajar inside the storage unit. |

Some goods can be stored inside
appliances. |
 |
Pack books flat and put boxes with books
or papers on skids or pallets to prevent moisture absorption. |

Clothing, curtains and drapes should be
cleaned and stored on hangers. |
 |
For storing or hanging your clothes, special
wardrobe boxes are available from box or U-Haul dealers. |
 |
Dishes and glassware boxes should have a
layer of padding top and bottom and each item should be wrapped. |

Nest bowls and cups and stand plates on end.
Fill all pockets with padding. |
 |
Stand sofas and
mattresses on end on a pallet or plastic sheet. |
 |
Disassemble beds and tables and put them
upside down on the floor. |
 |
Stack Boxes on dressers and use drawers to
store delicate items. |
 |
Store light chairs inverted seat to seat. |
 |
For the best protection of your goods, use
special purpose storage boxes, which are available from box or
U-Haul dealers. |
 |
Wrap Christmas lights around a piece of cardboard and
put packing paper or newsprint (won't stain these) around around all of it inside the box. |
 |
Wrap large lamp bases in padding and pad smaller
lamps and pack inside box with extra side padding. |
 |
Pack lamp shades separately. |
 |
Pack mirrors, windows and record albums on
edge and add lots of side padding inside box and between mirrors to secure. |

When locking your unit make sure you put your
key or combination in a safe place, one that you will remember. |
 |
Leave a
center isle for access and stack your items at least an inch off the
floor for better ventilation. |
 |
Any items like clothing and fabric should have a couple
of moth balls packed in with the items to help prevent pests. |
 |
Although
we have contracted with a commercial pest control service for
spraying, some folks also set off bug bombs about once a month for
protection inside their unit. For added protection you might want to
consider using DeCon or similar to prevent mice as well. |
