Self Storage Tips & Hints

We want your storage experience with us to be as enjoyable as possible. With that in mind, here are some tips and hints on how to make the best use of your space and protect your stored items.

STORAGE Q & A

bullet

Fill containers to capacity or fill extra spaces with packaging material.

bullet

Pack heavy items into small boxes, this will make them easier to move.

bullet

Label every box so that you can find what you need later. Leave space to reach the back of the unit and put frequently used items near the front.

bullet

Don't use newsprint to pack anything that can be stained by the ink.

bullet

Metal objects like tools and bikes should be wiped with a rag containing machine oil to prevent rust.

bullet

Appliances should be clean and dry.

bullet

Defrost refrigerators and freezers before storing and leave doors ajar inside the storage unit.

bullet

Some goods can be stored inside appliances.

bullet

Pack books flat and put boxes with books or papers on skids or pallets to prevent moisture absorption.

bullet

Clothing, curtains and drapes should be cleaned and stored on hangers.

bullet

For storing or hanging your clothes, special wardrobe boxes are available from box or U-Haul dealers.

bullet

Dishes and glassware boxes should have a layer of padding top and bottom and each item should be wrapped.

bullet

Nest bowls and cups and stand plates on end. Fill all pockets with padding.

bullet

Stand sofas and mattresses on end on a pallet or plastic sheet.

bullet

Disassemble beds and tables and put them upside down on the floor.

bullet

Stack Boxes on dressers and use drawers to store delicate items.

bullet

Store light chairs inverted seat to seat.

bullet

For the best protection of your goods, use special purpose storage boxes, which are available from box or U-Haul dealers.

bullet

Wrap Christmas lights around a piece of cardboard and put packing paper or newsprint (won't stain these) around around all of it inside the box.

bullet

Wrap large lamp bases in padding and pad smaller lamps and pack inside box with extra side padding.

bullet

Pack lamp shades separately.

bullet

Pack mirrors, windows and record albums on edge and add lots of side padding inside box and between mirrors to secure.

bullet

When locking your unit make sure you put your key or combination in a safe place, one that you will remember.

bullet

Leave a center isle for access and stack your items at least an inch off the floor for better ventilation.

bullet

Any items like clothing and fabric should have a couple of moth balls packed in with the items to help prevent pests.

bullet

Although we have contracted with a commercial pest control service for spraying, some folks also set off bug bombs about once a month for protection inside their unit. For added protection you might want to consider using DeCon or similar to prevent mice as well.
